On January 17th, 2019, Staten Island Academy’s (SIA) 7th and 8th graders performed in their winter chorus concert. Throughout the years, SIA’s middle school students have been performing in many different concerts from spring and winter concerts to performing at assemblies and special events. This year, the 7th and 8th graders have performed a variety of songs, like “Heart and Soul” by Hoagy Carmicheal (7th grade) and “Just Believe” by (8th grade). Both groups have been preparing for this special show since the beginning of the school year and both grades have been working very hard to perfect their pieces since then. The 7th graders also performed “Dound. Akuru” by Rollo Dilworth. They had been working on this piece since the beginning of the year and also sang it during SIA’s annual Christmas assembly. When they sang this song at the concert, everyone enjoyed the fun and musical piece “I think that everyone did a great job and it was a really fun experience,” says Charles S, who is a 7th grade student that had performed in the show.
Ms. Wheatley’s instrumental elective also performed at the winter concert. The elective performed 2 different songs while the two grades transitioned after their performances. One of the songs that the elective had performed was also performed during SIA’s winter assembly, and it was played for Chinese New Year during the assembly and many people enjoyed it when the elective played it again at the winter concert, along with the other song that they had performed.
The teachers have also worked very hard to prepare for the concert. Mr. Weisman worked with both grades on their songs and helped them with their pieces, concert positions, and he also accompanied all the pieces with his piano. Overall, the concert was a huge success. The students, teachers, and audience enjoyed the songs that had been performed and all of the enthusiasm that both the students and teachers presented.
